SDQ in Practice: From Assessment to Impact

Our one-day course equips schools to use the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire alongside qualitative assessments to assess, plan, support, and measure pupils’ social and emotional growth and development.

Description

This course provides practitioners with practical guidance on using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to identify pupils’ social, emotional and behavioural needs and translate this insight into effective support. Participants will learn how to confidently complete and interpret the SDQ and use the results to inform meaningful social and emotional development plans.

The training explores how to combine quantitative SDQ data with qualitative information, including professional observations, parent perspectives and the child’s voice, to build a clear understanding of a pupil’s needs. Practitioners will learn how to set measurable aims, select appropriate interventions, and monitor progress over time.

Through practical examples and guided activities, participants will develop the confidence to choose and justify suitable wellbeing interventions, review their effectiveness, and adapt support where needed. The course also supports practitioners in presenting wellbeing strategies and impact evidence to Ofsted and other inspection bodies.

Overall, the course equips schools with a clear framework for assessing need, planning support, implementing interventions and evidencing impact on pupils’ social and emotional development and readiness to learn.
